North Central survived a Rogers rally and Shadle Park rolled over Mt. Spokane in Wednesday night’s first-round games of the District 8 3A boys basketball tournament that determines regional seeding for the four Greater Spokane League representatives.
NC plays at Shadle and Mt. Spokane at Rogers tonight at 7:15 in the games to decide the four seeds.
North Central 59, Rogers 51: The host Indians (12-9) held the Pirates scoreless in a 15-0 second quarter, but Rogers closed within 48-47 in the fourth quarter before falling short. Justin Materne hit 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter for NC and finished with 10 points, as did teammate Dylan Harris. Isaiah Antoine scored 17 and made 7 of 8 free throws for the Indians, who were 19 of 24 from the line, including 13 of 18 in the final period. Jesse Vaughan had a game-high 26 points for Rogers (9-12), the only Pirate in double figures.
Shadle Park 59, Mt. Spokane 41: Luke Jordan made 6 of 8 3-point tries to account for all 18 of his points and the host Highlanders (17-4) beat the Wildcats (7-14). Matt Barnes added 15 points, making 7 of 8 free throws as Shadle made 18 of 21 from the line. The Highlanders got off to a fast start with a 13-4 edge after the first quarter.
District 7 1A
Freeman 44, Lakeside 27: The Scotties (19-1) took control with a 19-7 edge in the third quarter after a topsy-turvy first half at Mead to claim the district title and the No. 1 seed to regionals. Freeman sprinted to a 15-2 lead in the first quarter before the Eagles rallied in the second quarter to trail 18-13 at the half. Peter Heinen scored 12 points, had 10 rebounds and added five assists and five steals for the winners.
The Eagles play Chewelah at 8 p.m. Saturday at Mead to determine the No. 2 and 3 seeds to regionals.
Chewelah 40, Newport 27: Forest Trampush scored 10 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had seven steals and Jon Polm scored 13 points as the Cougars (13-9) eliminated the Grizzlies (10-12) at Mead to secure a berth to regionals.
District 8 3A
Shadle Park and East Valley won opening-round games in the tournament that will determine seeding for the GSL’s four representatives to the Eastern Regional. Today at 5:30 p.m., EV plays at Shadle for the No. 1 and 2 seeds while NC goes to Mt. Spokane to settle the No. 3 and 4 seeds.
Shadle Park 69, North Central 32: The host Highlanders (16-5) had three players with five steals apiece in taking the easy win over the Indians (2-19). Bianca Pope was the only Shadle player scoring in double figures with 11 points.
East Valley 68, Mt. Spokane 53: Morgan Manchester hit 5 of 7 3-point attempts on her way to 25 points and Janea Knopp added 11 rebounds as host EV (11-10) took a 22-8 lead in the first quarter and rode it to the win over the Wildcats (7-14).
District 7 1A
Freeman 56, Newport 25: The Scotties (20-0) rolled over the Grizzlies (14-9) at Mead to secure the district championship and No. 1 seed to regionals. MacKenzie Taylor scored 16 points to lead the Scotties and collected seven rebounds and five assists. Megan McIntyre added 12 points.
Newport plays Lakeside at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Mead to determine the No.2 and 3 seeds to regionals.
Lakeside 60, Kettle Falls 48: The Eagles (13-8) pulled away from the Bulldogs (10-13) with a 15-2 run in the second quarter at Mead on their way to clinching a berth to the regionals. The Eagles shot 43 percent from the field with Leslie Stillar scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
