Trojans take home 1st volleyball title

The Post Falls volleyball team had just captured its first league championship in school history and the Trojans’ reactions were rather businesslike.

Senior setter Jalana White insisted her team would be celebrating in due time.

“We’re trying to keep our composure because we’re in their gym, but I can tell you it will be a fun bus ride home,” White said following Post Falls’ telling 25-6, 26-24, 25-10 win over Lake City in a 5A Inland Empire League match Thursday.

The Trojans’ play was inspired from the first serve. With her team ahead 5-3, senior libero Marian deTar was behind the service line for 12 straight points as Post Falls (17-4, 6-0) took control early.

Post Falls closed out the first game with back-to-back kills from Tori Bertsch and Danielle Meehan.

Then the Trojans had their lone rough patch of the match in the middle of the second game. With senior Holly Cutler delivering some difficult serves, LC (7-8, 3-2) scored nine straight points for a 22-14 lead.

But Post Falls came storming back. A Meehan kill capped the longest rally between the teams, allowing the Trojans to pull into a 23-23 tie.

Moments later, Meehan had another of her team-high eight kills and White finished off LC with a kill that found the floor.

The Trojans’ spirited play continued into the final game. They zipped to an 18-3 lead and were not threatened.

“It’s a great piece of history for us,” said third-year Post Falls coach Willow Hanna. “It means a lot to me to bring it to our school and for this team to accomplish it. The girls are really excited that they’re going to be part of a banner that goes up on the wall. We don’t have any volleyball-related thing in our gym or in our commons.”

LC coach Bret Taylor applauded the Trojans.

“I don’t know if they’re physically the strongest team – they’re not a Sandpoint. But they’re a better team than anyone I’ve seen,” he said. “They’re so in sync with each other. That’s where we have to get if we’re going to be competitive in this league.”
