The Post Falls Trojans captured the school’s first league championship in boys soccer since it began fielding a team in 1996 with a 3-2 win over Lewiston in a 5A Inland Empire League match Tuesday in Lewiston.
The win allowed Post Falls (9-4-2, 5-1) to secure the top seed in next week’s Region I tournament. The Trojans will play host to No. 4 Lewiston (2-9-1, 0-6) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. In another opener, No. 3 Lake City (5-6-2) goes to No. 2 Coeur d’Alene (9-2-5), also at 3:30. The winners earn state berths, the losers are out.
Charlie Redline led the Trojans with two goals. Wesley Billingslea had the other score.
•In other matches involving IEL teams, Sandpoint (12-1-2) handled Lake City (5-6-2) 3-1 at LC. Anders Nostahl and Daniel Anderson each scored to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead. Chris Wheelock scored for LC. … Scott Murdie scored on a penalty kick for Coeur d’Alene (9-2-5) and Mac Stannard scored for Moscow (8-4-2) as the teams tied 1-1 at Moscow.
•5A Inland Empire League: In a key match to decide postseason seeding, Post Falls (4-10-0, 2-4-0), behind goals from Krysta Howard and Tareyn White, topped visiting Lewiston (4-6-5, 1-3-2) 2-0 after a scoreless first half. The 5A Region I tournament begins Oct. 14 with No. 3 Post Falls playing at No. 2 Lake City and No. 4 Lewiston traveling to No. 1 Coeur d’Alene in winner-to-state, loser-out matches.
•In other matches involving IEL teams, Coeur d’Alene (8-4-3) downed Moscow (6-8-2) 3-1 at CdA. All the scoring occurred in the second half. The Vikings outshot the Bears 20-1. Hayley Smith, Sarah Jordan and Ashlie Ward scored for CdA. … Megan Pagano’s goal in the 65th minute lifted Sandpoint (9-4-2) past visiting Lake City (5-3-5) 2-1. Alicia Mertz scored off a penalty kick for the Bulldogs in the first half. Anna Teall scored LC’s goal.
•Great Northern League: Pullman (8-0, 6-0) edged visiting West Valley (6-2, 5-2) 1-0 in a shootout. Neither team had ideal scoring opportunities in regulation. … Cheney (8-1, 6-1) cruised to a 6-0 win over visiting Medical Lake (3-4, 3-3). The Blackhawks had 23 shots while not allowing the Cardinals a shot. Alyssa Kirstein, Kellie Zakrzewski and Hilary Martin scored two goals apiece. … Kayla Moorman scored a hat trick as injury-plagued Deer Park (4-4, 4-3) downed Colville (2-6, 2-5) 3-1 at Colville. The Stags outshot the Indians 32-7. Colville goalie Chelsee Sager made 25 saves. …Visiting Clarkston (1-7, 1-6) broke through, stopping Riverside (0-8, 0-6) 2-1 in a shootout. •Intermountain League: Bonners Ferry (4-3-0, 3-0-0), behind four goals from Kendra Johnson, topped visiting Kellogg (2-6-0, 1-4-0) 6-0. Emily Pauls and Liz Racer scored the Badgers’ other goals.
•Great Northern League boys: Jacob Mager finished in 16 minutes, 51 seconds to lead Cheney to a pair of wins over Medical Lake (21-39) and Clarkston (22-39) at Clarkston. Evan O’Keefe of Clarkston finished second overall (17:19) and led the Bantams past Medical Lake (25-33). … Corbin Williamson of Riverside won in 17:51 as the Rams slipped past Pullman (28-29) and topped West Valley (20-37) at WV. Pullman topped WV (20-39).
•Great Northern League girls: Shelby Maurer took first in 20:48 to lead Cheney to wins over Clarkston (21-40) and Medical Lake (20-41) at Clarkston. Clarkston edged Medical Lake (26-29). … Jess Mildes of Riverside took first in 20:34 as Riverside downed Pullman (20-39) but lost to West Valley (26-29) at WV. Rachel Rubright (20:56), who finished third, led WV past Pullman (20-37).
•Great Northern League: League-leading Pullman (7-0) swept Cheney (2-5) at Pullman. Stephanie Logan led the Greyhounds with 11 kills and six aces. Teammate Katie Guettinger had 22 assists and Jordan Levenseller had 13 digs. Sydney Barrow led Cheney with seven digs. … Colville (6-2) swept visiting Medical Lake (0-7). Makayla Carr led the Indians with five aces and six kills. Her sister, Leanna, had 18 assists. … Passing the ball well, West Valley (6-1) swept visiting Deer Park (1-6). •In a non-league match involving Inland Empire League teams, visiting Sandpoint (13-3) swept Coeur d’Alene (2-17). Piper Wahlin had 10 kills, Koko James had 17 assists and Christina Johnson had 15 digs and two aces to lead Sandpoint. Kylie Curtis led CdA with five kills, 12 assists and 10 digs. … Lake City (8-8) rallied to top Moscow (6-7) 3-2 at LC. Hilary Ayers led LC with 22 assists, seven kills and three aces. Teammate Britta Forsythe had 13 kills and Bridgette Lowe led Moscow with 16 kills.
