Individual winner Alicia Doohan (21 minutes, 14 seconds for 3 miles) led Gonzaga Prep’s girls to victory Wednesday during a four-way Greater Spokane League season-opening cross country meet at Liberty Lake.
G-Prep’s Byron Groh (16:47) won the boys race by 2 seconds over University’s Jon Smith, who led the Titans to the team title. Third-place Christian Bucko and fourth-place Steven Witkoe aided U-Hi’s cause.
In other openers, the host Highlanders girls and Ferris’ boys won four-way meets at Shadle Park. Mead’s Baylee Mires (18:51.6) won the girls race, followed by five Highlanders. Adam Thorne (15:49.4) led the way for Ferris, with Shadle’s Nathan Weitz in second place, 9 seconds back. … Freshman Katie Knight (19:53) and Molly Martin (20:33) ran 1-2 for North Central, but the host Bears placed six runners in the top nine to win a three-way girls meet at Central Valley. Third-place Jamie Lambie (20:47) led CV. In the boys meet, Ben Johnston (15:47) broke free from the pack and guided NC to the team win. The Indians had five runners in the top eight. Mt. Spokane’s Allan Schroeder (16:09) placed second.
