CdA survives Tigers’ surge

Chad Chalich scored 21 points with 10 rebounds and went 11 of 12 from the free- throw line and Coeur d’Alene (1-0) survived a late run by Lewis and Clark (0-1) to win its opener 74-66 in nonleague action in CdA.

Austin Dixon tallied 17 points to lead the Tigers, who used three consecutive 3-pointers to turn an 11-point deficit into two points late in the game. But solid free-throw shooting by the Vikings allowed them to maintain the lead. Deon Watson added 19 points for the Vikings.

Lake City 52, Enumclaw 29: Chris Wheelock led all scorers with 19 points, Mark Smyly added 12 points and the Timberwolves (2-0) outscored the Hornets (0-1) by 14 points in the second half to pull away in Coeur d’Alene.

Lewiston 50, La Grande (Ore.) 32: Jay Thomason had a team-high nine points coming on three 3-pointers and the Bengals (2-0) knocked off the Tigers (0-1) in the opening round of the Bengal Shootout in Lewiston.

Priest River 57, Newport 40: Max Salesky finished 3 of 6 from the 3-point line and scored a game-high 19 points with four blocked shots to lead the Spartans (1-0) to a win in their opener against the Grizzlies (1-1) in Priest River. Eric Holbrook added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans.

Colville 70, Reardan 42: Miguel Anaya led all scorers with 22 points and Colville (1-0) upended Reardan (0-1) thanks to a 36-18 halftime lead in Reardan. Trevor Peone scored 15 of his 20 points for Reardan in the second half.

Chewelah 68, Kettle Falls 19: Derek Smith led with 11 points and Tyler Monasmith added 10 as the Cougars (1-0) crushed the Bulldogs (1-1) in their opener in Chewelah. The Cougars allowed just six points in the second half.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 53, Columbia (Burbank) 43: Jake Eichner hit three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points to lead the Broncos (1-0) against the visiting Coyotes (0-1). Freshman Dylan Hartz added nine points, five assists and five steals for the Broncos.

Curlew 53, St. Michael’s 34: Chris Browning scored a game-high 13 points and the Cougars (1-0) outscored the Warriors (1-2) 22-8 in the second quarter to take a 17-point halftime lead at St. Michael’s.

Wilbur-Creston 56, Mansfield 27: Jake Tonasket led with 17 points and nine rebounds and Damon Abel added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds as the Wildcats (1-0) cruised past the Kernels (0-1) in Mansfield.

Oroville 70, Republic 44: The Hornets (1-0) outscored the Tigers (0-1) 30-10 in the first half and never let them back in the game in Republic. The Tigers were led by 14 points from Tyler Bowe and eight points from Mike Slagle.

Kellogg 59, Coeur d’Alene Charter 35: Tyler Morgan and Garret Wendt combined for 24 points and the Wildcats (1-1) outscored the Panthers (1-1) 22-8 in the fourth quarter to take the opening game of the Silver Valley tournament in Kellogg.

Wallace 40, Mullan 34: The Miners (1-0) beat the Tigers (0-1) in the second game of the Silver Valley tournament in Kellogg. The Miners will play Kellogg today in the championship game.

Mullan will play Coeur d’Alene Charter in the consolation.

Garfield- Palouse 67, LaCrosse-Washtucna 57: Steven Griffin and Blake Slocum combined for 47 of the Vikings’ (1-0) points in their win over the visiting Tigercats (0-1). Jeff Zimmer led L-W with 17 points and six rebounds.
