Central Valley’s wrestling team is getting closer to full strength with the return of injured veterans, first-year coach Doug Pecha said.
Still, the Bears were short-handed Wednesday in their Greater Spokane League match with Ferris when others sat out. It didn’t seem to matter.
CV (6-0) remained unbeaten with a 51-21 triumph that showcased a couple of returnees and promising youngsters.
“We were missing four guys but had some new guys who are becoming eligible and in the lineup,” Pecha said.
One of them, senior 171-pounder Nick Beeler, pinned Jenya Nicks in just his third match in an injury-plagued season for a 30-15 lead that swung the momentum back CV’s way.
Senior 215-pounder Jared Boucher joined the lineup and pulled out a 4-3 win over Saxons sophomore Drew Sharkey.
The Bears also got strong efforts from five sophomores and a freshman. Cody Spillane beat a senior at 135, and fellow sophomore Dan Schoultz rolled off his back for a pin at 285 as the first period expired in the third-from-last contest.
Another sophomore, Kolten Cole, trailed veteran Russell Stinson 12-11 at 189 with one-half minute left before injury defaulting.
