Prep roundup: Bullpups boys give Titans the boot

The Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (9-4-1) scored three second-half goals to rally for a 4-2 victory over the University Titans (8-6) in a loser-out District 8 4A boys soccer match Wednesday night at Joe Albi Stadium.

The Bullpups move on to play the top-seeded Mead Panthers at 7 p.m. Friday at Albi.

Matt Harper staked the Titans to a 2-1 lead at the end of the first half with goals in the 11th and 36th minutes.

G-Prep pulled even 15 minutes into the second half on a goal by Chase Winkler. Alex Cleveland put the Bullpups ahead with a goal 8 minutes later and Riley Sullivan added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute.


Jake Schrader staked starter Cody Lunt to the only runs he would need with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and the Mead Panthers (13-5) defeated the University Titans (11-8) 3-1 at Mead.

Lunt (4-2) went the distance and allowed just one run – coming in the sixth inning when the Titans left the bases loaded – on seven hits.

Schrader’s homer was his sixth of the season. Mead stayed a game ahead of Ferris for third place in league play.

Elsewhere in GSL action, Beau Bozett went 3 for 3 with a home run, driving in four runs and scoring twice to propel the Ferris Saxons (13-6) to a 10-0 five-inning victory over the visiting Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (7-12). Spencer Ansett (4-3) allowed two hits in his five innings of work for Ferris. … Dean Neilson had a big day on the mound and at the plate for Lewis and Clark. Neilson (5-4) gave up four hits and struck out seven and went 2 for 3 with a solo home run as the Tigers (13-6) made quick work of the visiting East Valley Knights (3-16) in an 11-1 five-inning victory at Hart Field. Donnie Santos had three hits, three RBIs and scored twice for LC. … Mitch Bocook (1-4) picked up his first win of the season with a complete-game six-hitter as the North Central Indians (3-16) beat the visiting Rogers Pirates (2-17) 4-1. Seth Wolfe had two of NC’s four hits.

•Jason Pattis went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored and the Lake City Timberwolves (10-9, 4-6) rallied for a 7-6 road victory over the Coeur d’Alene Vikings (19-8, 8-4) in Inland Empire League 5A play.


The Pullman Greyhounds (9-7, 6-4) used a pair of seventh-inning rallies to post an 8-7, 10-9 doubleheader sweep over the visiting Riverside Rams (8-8, 3-7) in Great Northern League play.

Pullman overcame a 6-0 first-inning deficit – four runs coming on Jacy Hunt’s grand slam – in the first game. Jordan Levenseller knotted the score at 7-7 with a two-run inside-the-park homer in the fifth inning and drove in Kaysee Perisho with the game-winner in the seventh. In the nightcap, Raina D’Aleo’s slap bunt RBI single capped a two-run rally in the seventh for Pullman.

•The Central Valley Bears (7-10) scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 20-13 upset victory over the University Titans (14-3) in GSL action. Breann Warren went 3 for 4 with a grand slam and six RBIs for the Titans.

•Katie Rowe drove in the go-ahead run in a four-run seventh inning and the Lake City Timberwolves (16-4, 7-3) rallied for a 7-5 road win over the Coeur d’Alene Vikings (19-5, 6-4) in a battle for first place in the Inland Empire League 5A.

•Alesha Barr and Taylor Samuelson each went 3 for 4 and the Kellogg Wildcats (6-5, 5-4) won a 13-9 slugfest over the host Priest River Spartans (4-11, 3-6) in Intermountain League play.


The Lewis and Clark Tigers boys and girls romped to victories at a GSL match at Sun Dance Golf Course.

The boys, led by medalist Robby McKee (72) beat runner-up Mead by 34 strokes. The girls, led by medalist Chessey Thomas (72), beat runner-up Gonzaga Prep by 41 strokes.

Track and field

The Pullman Greyhounds swept a dual meet against the visiting Clarkston Bantams with the girls winning 108-36 and the boys winning 102-34.

Jennifer Nakata led Pullman with wins in the 100-meter hurdles (16.50 seconds) and the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches), while running a leg on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Dauson Crawford paced the Pullman boys with wins in the 100 (11.80), 200 (23.60) and the 4x100 relay.

Also in the GNL, Cheney’s boys and girls swept a three-way meet with Deer Park and host Riverside. Riverside’s boys and girls topped DP. DeAngelo Jones led the Cheney boys with wins in the high jump, long jump and 4x400 relay. Chelsea Breen led the Cheney girls with victories in both hurdles races and the 4x400 relay.
