Prep roundup: Ferris, CV will meet for district title

Ryan Krustangel drove in four runs with two doubles and a single Wednesday as Ferris advanced to the District 8 4A baseball title game with a 5-0 win over Mead at Avista Stadium.

Spencer Ansett struck out seven for the Saxons (15-6), who will play Central Valley at 7 p.m. Friday at Avista for the top regional seed.

Levi Axworthy started a seventh-inning triple play for Mead (15-6), which will meet Lewis and Clark at 4 p.m. Friday at Avista in a loser-out game.

In the late game, Scott Simon hit a two-run homer and scattered seven hits as CV (18-3) topped LC 5-2. Dane Berg added a two-run single for the Bears. Sage Poland of LC (14-8) struck out nine.

•Sean Scholer worked out of no-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh to preserve Cheney’s 5-4 win over visiting West Valley (11-7) at the District 7 2A tournament. Scholer struck out two, walked in a run, then coaxed Steve Salazar’s game-ending groundout to shortstop. The Blackhawks (16-3) earned a regional berth and will play Clarkston (15-5) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Pullman for seeding. … Nick Rimmelspacher’s two-run double highlighted a five-run fifth as Clarkston recorded an 8-0 win at Pullman. Kyle Davison had three hits for the Greyhounds (11-8), who will play WV at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pullman for the third and final regional berth.

•Tyler Moore-Long went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including the go-ahead two-run single in the sixth, and earned the win in relief as Lakeside (14-6) edged visiting Newport 9-8 at Nine Mile Falls in their district tournament. Logan Goulet of the Grizzlies (8-12) went 3 for 4 with two solo homers and a three-run double. Lakeside will host Chewelah (16-5) at 11 a.m. Saturday for the No. 1 berth to regionals. … Ryan Finley went 2 for 3 with three RBIs to guide Chewelah to a 10-6 win at Freeman. Cameron Duckett had three RBIs for the Scotties (12-9), who will play Newport at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Nine Mile Falls in a loser-out game.

•Kurt South’s two-out RBI double in the seventh gave Lakeland (11-9) a 4-3 win over Moscow (4-17) in an Idaho 4A Region I loser-out game at Rathdrum. Lakeland will play at No. 1 Sandpoint at 4 p.m. today.

Boys soccer

Alfredo Gomez scored 2 minutes apart in the second half to forge a tie, and Sunnyside won a shootout 3-2 to defeat East Valley 3-2 in 3A regional play at Gonzaga Prep. Adam Talley scored at 35 and 50 minutes to give the Knights (8-7) a 2-0 edge. Sunnyside earned a state berth and will play for seeding on Saturday against West Valley (Yakima), which defeated visiting Mt. Spokane 4-2. James Biddle scored both goals for the Wildcats (2-13).

Tennis

All No. 1 seeds advanced to finals at the District 8 4A tournament at University. Mead’s Katijene Stime, seeded third, made the final in girls singles. Ferris’ Dan Steiner and Mikka Valsta, also seeded third, made the boys doubles final. Championships are today at U-Hi.

•The top four seeds mostly held true during District 8 3A play at Mt. Spokane and East Valley. Mt. Spokane’s Annie Harms beat Shadle Park’s fourth-seeded Tess Spargo 6-3, 6-0. The tourney continues today and Friday at EV.

Softball

Riley Swanson pitched a six-inning no-hitter in the opener and Emma Sandaine went 3 for 3 with three runs in the second game as Clarkston (9-6, 7-5 Great Northern League) posted a 10-0, 13-1 sweep over visiting Medical Lake (1-19, 1-13). Clarkston’s Kenzee Burke went 4 for 7 with five runs on the day.

Golf

Odessa’s Kira Powell shot an 11-over-par 83 to lead the field by 20 shots during the District 7 2B/1B subdistrict at Deer Park Golf Club. Cusick led the team race with 44.5 points. The top 15 golfers advance to Wednesday’s district at DP.
