State golf: LC’s Thomas grabs early lead

Defending State 4A girls champion Chessey Thomas of Lewis and Clark got off to a great start Tuesday at Sun Willows in Pasco.

Thomas shot a first-round 68 to take a one-shot lead over Bellarmine Prep’s Jordan Ferreira.

University’s Kaitlen Parsons is tied for fourth place after opening with a 72.

Gonzaga Prep’s Jenna Speltz is tied for sixth after a 74. LC’s Megan Haase carded a 77 and is tied for 14th, while Mead’s Kristen Hansen shot 78 – tying her for 17th.

4A boys

Garrett Howard of Ferris led Greater Spokane League golfers with a 73 at Canyon Lakes in Kennewick – four shots behind co-leaders Jarrett Foote of Woodinville and James Feutz of Bellarmine Prep.

Lewis and Clark is in the running for the team title behind Robby McKee (74, tied for 10th), Peter Gullickson (75, tied for 13th) and Christian Alfaro (76, tied for 17th).

3A girls

Mt. Spokane’s Savana Bezdicek is tied with Holy Names Academy’s Kristin Tan for first place after opening with a 71 at Horn Rapids in Richland.

Jenni White of East Valley was the only other GSL golfer to make the cut. She shot 88 and is tied for 34th.

3A boys

The lone GSL golfer to make the cut was Mt. Spokane’s Nick Thurston, who shot a 78 at Meadow Springs in Richland to advance by one stroke. He is tied for 28th place.

Scott Kim of Hanford leads at 70.

2A girls

Paige Whidbee of Pullman led area golfers with an opening-round 81 at Apple Tree in Yakima.

Whidbee is tied for seventh place and trails leader Alexis Keating of Elma by 11 strokes.

Kelsey Dutton of Deer Park is in 10th place after carding an 82.

Pullman’s Jennifer Sorensen (84, 12th) and Cheney’s Marye Fuqua (99, tied for 26th) also made the cut.

2A boys

Tyler Carlson of Clarkston is tied for third place after a 71 at Apple Tree in Yakima. He is three strokes behind co-leaders Andrew Whalen of Ephrata and Blaine’s Ryan Wallen.

Colville teammates Casey Cox and Drew Cowbrough both opened with 74s and are tied for 12th place.

Also making the cut were Deer Park’s Mitch Rummer (78, tied for 25th) and Clarkston’s Austin Arnett (79, tied for 33rd).

1A girls

Alyssa Maine of Freeman is the first-round leader after shooting 80 at Columbia Point in Richland.

Arlee Coleman of Chewelah is second – three shots back. Lake Roosevelt’s Kylie Friedlander is tied for third at 84. Newport’s Courtney Wiese (103, tied for 27th) also made the cut.

1A boys

Freeman’s Tyler Barrong is in a tie for third after opening with a 69 at Columbia Point in Richland.

Goldendale’s Zach Wanderscheid set the pace with a 65.

Also making the cut were Freeman’s Dylan Maine (75, tied for 14th), Lakeside’s Ryan Newcomb (76, tied for 20th), Freeman’s Jess Wingett and Ryan McKinney (both 77s, tied for 22nd) and Chewelah’s Carson Stroyan (78, tied for 26th).

2B/1B girls

Odessa’s Kira Powell is third after a first-round 77 at Tri-City Country Club in Kennewick – six shots behind Kelly Miller of Life Christian Academy.

St. John-Endicott’s Erin Schuster is ninth after a 92. Wilbur-Creston’s Kim Conway shot 96 and is 14th, while SJE’s Michal Schuster (100) is 17th.

2B/1B boys

Northwest Christian’s Nick Mattox and Life Christian Academy’s Nathan Putnam shot 68s to share the lead at Tri-City Country Club in Kennewick.

Colfax’s Caleb Bravard is third after shooting 70, while NWC’s Brandon Drake shot 71 to tie for fourth.
