Kamiakin wins 3A gymnastics regional

Kayla Curtis took second in the floor exercise with 9.525 points and finished fourth in the vault and fifth in the uneven bars to lead Kamiakin to a 3A/2A regional gymnastics title Friday night at University High School.

The Braves scored 173.6 points to edge host U-Hi by 1.525 points for the lone team berth to the state meet, Friday and next Saturday at the Tacoma Dome, despite not having a girl finish in the top five in the all-around.

The top two all-round finishers and top five in each event not already on the winning team advance to state.

Shadle Park finished third in team scoring with 154.75 points, led by Alana Norman’s 37.05 points, which tied her for third in the all-around. Norman won the vault (9.4).

Mt. Spokane’s Courtney Bray won the all-around title at 37.625. She won the balance beam competition with a score of 9.7 and took third in both the bars (9.2) and floor (9.5). Davina Carr of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) took second with 37.25 points and also won the bars (9.375).

U-Hi’s Kady Markin earned the top score in the floor with a 9.55 and was fourth in two other events.

Wrestling

Through the first day of the 2A regional tournament, Deer Park (80 points) sits 1.5 points behind leader Othello for first place in Ellensburg.

Led by state-title hopeful Shawn Burton at 285 pounds, the Stags still have nine wrestlers in the running for individual titles.

East Valley and Cheney are in third and fourth place, respectively.
