High school wrestling: Titans top Rocky Mountain

For the second year in a row and fourth time since 2002, the University Titans captured the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic wrestling championship in Missoula.

The Titans scored 209.5 points on Saturday to outdistance runner-up Coeur d’Alene (166). Central Valley (163) took third and Mead (134) finished sixth.

It’s the largest margin of victory by the Titans in this meet.

“We have a good balanced team,” U-Hi coach Don Owen said.

U-Hi placed five in the finals and had two winners. Tyler Clark won at 112 pounds and Jake Laden was a champ at 215, topping Thomas Tucker of CdA 5-1.

Clark and Laden each had three pins.

“Tyler dominated his weight and Jake was overpowering,” Owen said.

Other area winners were: Jarod Maynes of CV (125); Jeremy Golding of Mead (135); and Jordan Rogers of Mead (171), who pinned Jacob Fry of U-H in 44 seconds.

U-Hi had 11 placers.

“That’s an all-time high for us at the tournament,” Owen said.

U-Hi (6-0 Greater Spokane League) returns to league dual action Thursday when it entertains Mead (5-1) in a big showdown.

• East Valley took second at the Kelso (Wash.) Invitational.

The Knights compiled 165.5 points to finish behind host Kelso (198).

EV had seven placers and five – Jaren Novakovich, Nick Sweeney, Alex Rockstrom, Matt Mastronardi and Aaron Christiansen – took second.
