GSL track and field preview

Returning state placers

4A – Billy Condon, GP (100, 7th), Wes Bailey, Mead (200, 4th; 300h, state champ), Andrew Gardner, Mead (3,200, 2nd); Michael Green, Mead (PV, 4th), Billy Rowell, CV (SP, 8th), Seth Regalado, Mead (discus, 7th), Sam Hilmes, Mead (javelin, 8th). 3A – Casey Adams, NC (1,600, 3rd), Bill Haven, NC (HJ, 7th), Tyler Wilson, SP (PV, 2nd), Scott Wurst, MtS (PV, 7th).

More lonely miles

Gardner placed second in the 3,200, but three other 4A runners who didn’t get to state were top-10 finishers in cross country, including Kenji Bierig of Lewis and Clark, who pulled away from Gardner for the title. Alex Kimsey was fifth and Tim Colliton 10th for Ferris. And in 3A, Nathan Weitz of SP and Vince Hamilton, who couldn’t get to state, went 1-2 in cross country. Adams was fifth and Jon Smith of University was eighth. … Weitz has already run a state-best 4:18 in the 1,600. … Gunner Kayser has joined Wes Bailey, Evan Maack and Mike Smith on Mead’s 400 relay. The Panthers were second at state last year in 42.48 seconds and are sitting fourth this year at 43.79. … Mt. Spokane returns all four members of the 3A fifth-place 1,600 relay with a goal of breaking 3:20. With just one race under their belt, Jack Cerenzia, Chase Naccarato, Tyler Green and Casey O’Leary are currently second in the state at 3:29. … University sophomore Jay Alexander has already cleared 14 feet in the pole vault, tying for the state lead.

League outlook

Mead is favored again but CV has the numbers to pose a challenge. … The Panthers return enough state veterans to be included on the early list to be in the hunt for a state title, but they lost a lot of power off last year’s record-breaking team. Mead scored 82.5 points, the highest for the big-school title. … Jeff Lochhead is the new coach at Rogers.

4A/3A postseason

The district meet is the usual Thursday-Friday at SFCC. This year the dates are May 12-13. The 4A schools are sending six individuals and three relays to regionals, the 3A’s advance four and two. Regionals are at SFCC on May 20-21. The top three for 4A and 3A advance to state, which is May 26-28 at Mt. Tahoma HS in Tacoma. … League meets started this week. The biggest one, probably, for boys and girls, is April 28 when Central Valley goes to Mead.

State placers

4A – Baylee Mires, Mead (800 and 1,600, state champ in both), Courtney Hutchinson, Mead (shot put, state champ) Paula Jennings, CV (shot put, 7th). 3A – Katie Knight, NC (1,600 and 3,200, both 2nd), Kendra Weitz, SP (1,600, 5th; 3,200, 3rd), Courtney Bray, MtS (PV, 6th), Britta LaVoie, Mt.S (PV, 7th), Celena Ward, NC (discus and javelin, both 7th).

News and notes

Annie Pokorny, an excellent middle distance runner at Lewis and Clark has transferred to a school in southern Idaho to pursue a professional cross country skiing career. … Paula Jennings of Central Valley is just beginning to throw, coming back from an ACL injury. … Shadle Park sophomore Kendra Weitz has already run a 10:38.5 in the 3,200, third best in the state. … Brooks Cooper is the new coach at Rogers.

League outlook

Central Valley and Mead have the numbers to battle for the dual-meet title but the Panthers are going to be a better big-meet team. Whether that is enough to defend its state title remains to be seen.

Big meets

Things really don’t get started in earnest until April with a few elite athletes heading to Arcadia, Calif., next weekend. … The big ones locally are the last three weeks of the month. Pasco is on the 16th, the same day some non-qualifiers head to Cheney for the Big Red, while the small schools are at the Undeberg. Mooberry is the 23rd at Whitworth and then the 30th is Riverside. After that, teams start tapering for the postseason. … Mt. Spokane kicked things off by sweeping the West Valley Invitational 12 days ago, but only a handful of GSL schools were there. The Wildcats followed that up last weekend in Yakima with the boys finishing first and the girls second in the Ram relays.
