Sandpoint girls back in state soccer title match

The Sandpoint girls will get what every team wants: a chance at redemption.

The Bulldogs beat Twin Falls 3-2 in the semifinals of the 4A State tournament Friday in Caldwell, and will play for the state championship against the team that beat them in the title game last year.

Bishop Kelly, which beat Hillcrest 2-1 in the other semifinal, will play Sandpoint today for the state title. The Bulldogs will be looking to avenge last year’s 3-2 loss.

• Kellsi Parson’s goal was all Lewiston needed as the Bengals advanced to the consolation final of the 5A tournament with a 1-0 win over Meridian at Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian.

Lewiston will take on Mountain View this morning. The Mavericks advanced after eliminating Lake City 3-0. Timberwolves goalkeeper Brittany Amburn made six saves, but Lake City couldn’t muster any offense.

• Timberlake stayed alive in the 3A tournament at Vallivue High School in Caldwell with a 2-0 win over Bliss.

Tina Holtz made 15 saves and Mercedes McComb and Michelle Nash scored goals for the Tigers, who will take on Marsh Valley in today’s consolation championship.

Marsh Valley advanced after beating Kellogg 3-2 in penalty kicks.

Post Falls’ shot at a state championship was ruined as Boise blanked the Trojans 3-0 in the semifinals of the 5A tournament at Eagle High School in Eagle, Idaho.

Scott Benner made eight saves for Post Falls, which will play Mt. View today in the third-place match.

Also in Eagle, Evan Teichman scored off an assist from Daniel Teichman, giving Lake City a 1-0 win over Skyline. The Timberwolves will take on Centennial today in the consolation final.

• Malte Noergaard’s overtime goal extended Lakeland’s season for one more match as the Hawks edged Burley 3-2 at the 4A tournament at Brothers Field in Caldwell.

Lakeland will take on Preston in today’s consolation championship.

Noergaard, an exchange student from Denmark, was moved from his usual spot on defense to a forward position in overtime. The move paid off as Noergaard dribbled past a defender and beat the keeper for the winner.

Alex Opland converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute for Lakeland’s other goal.

• Bonners Ferry’s season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Fruitland at the 3A tournament in Caldwell. The Badgers made it to the state title game last year in which they lost 3-1 to Wendell.
