Mead rolls to wrestling victory

Defending state champion Chandler Rogers opened the match by pinning Sean Burnett in 1 minute, 5 seconds in the 182-pound weight class and the Mead Panthers rolled to a 54-18 victory over the visiting Shadle Park Highlanders in Greater Spokane League wrestling action on Thursday.

The Panthers’ Mason Ju was bumped up a weight class to face Shadle Park heavyweight Nate Lungstrom and pinned the Highlander in 3:23.

Mead finished with six pins.

Defending state champion Terrence McKinney of Shadle Park pinned Mead’s Riley Jackson at the 1:08 mark of the first round in the 138-pound weight class.

• Elsewhere in the Greater Spokane League, heavyweight Ken Keller pinned Noah Buckley with 5 seconds remaining in the first round – starting a run of six consecutive pins, including three by freshmen – and the Rogers Pirates rallied from a 15-0 deficit to beat the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers 42-36. … Central Valley 113-pounder Bryson Beard and 195-pounder Aaron Stintzi notched pins in under a minute and the visiting Bears breezed to a 49-21 victory over the North Central Indians. Central Valley finished with six falls. … A forfeit at 220 started a streak of six straight wins for Mt. Spokane, capped by 126-pounder Jason Beck’s 10-3 decision over Dylan Cronkhite and the Wildcats rallied for a 42-22 victory over the visiting Ferris Saxons. … The visiting University Titans used six falls and four forfeits to romp past the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups 69-6.

Gymnastics

Mt. Spokane Wildcats junior Amara Poquette won almost all of the battles, but the Ferris Saxons won the Greater Spokane League meet at Ferris.

Poquette had victories in the balance beam, vault and floor exercise en route to the all-around victory, but the Saxons, behind Alexandria Dinwoodie’s win in the uneven bars held off the Wildcats 146.025 to 144.2 to capture first place.

University (142.125) was third, followed by Lewis and Clark (120.2) and Rogers (101.4).

Boys basketball

Nick Reppert scored nine of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter and the Kettle Falls Bulldogs romped to a 61-33 nonleague victory over the visiting Curlew Cougars.

Kettle Falls also received double-figure scoring from Conner McKern with 14 points, while Tyler Johnson scored 11 and Nathan Disque chipped in with 10.

Aaron McCullough scored 13 to top the Cougars, while Doug Herrmann added 12 points.

Kettle Falls turned a nine-point lead at halftime into a rout by outscoring the Cougars 34-15 in the second half.

Girls basketball

Avery Brown-Sonder tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists to propel the Lakeside (Plummer) Knights (4-1) to a 38-26 nonleague victory over the North Idaho Christian Royals.

Lakeside outscored North Idaho Christian 21-12 in the second half to earn the win.

• Elsewhere in nonleague play, Josie Stanard tossed in a game-high 16 points to lead four players in double figures and the Kettle Falls Bulldogs (2-2) cruised to a 76-28 victory over the visiting Curlew Cougars (2-2). … The Bonners Ferry Badgers (3-0) rolled to a 56-17 victory over the Clark Fork Wampus Cats (2-4) in Clark Fork. Mariah Miller had 11 points and seven steals for the Wampus Cats. Annie Wurm and Alicia Heigis topped Clark Fork with six rebounds apiece.

• In a Central Idaho League opener, Lexie Turkenberg hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points to power the Coeur d’Alene Charter Panthers (4-1, 1-0) to 41-22 victory over the visiting St. Maries Lumberjacks (1-3, 0-1).
