Three boys basketball teams share lead in NEA

The Northeast A League is still up for grabs.

Derek Smith scored 16 points and handed out seven assists as Chewelah beat Lakeside 63-57 Friday night in Chewelah to keep three teams tied for first place.

Colville and Freeman both won to keep pace with the Cougars atop the league.

Brandon Smith and Ben Johnston each added 14 points for the Cougars (13-4, 5-2), who rallied from a five-point first-quarter deficit.

Conner Moffatt scored a game-high 23 points for Lakeside (8-9, 3-4).

Colville 51, Riverside 47: Matt Hubbard and J.R. Henry combined for 29 points as the Indians (11-7, 5-2) edged the host Rams (4-13, 0-7). Colville led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter and survived Riverside’s rally. Tyler Axtell had 14 points and Logan Owens added 13 for the Rams.

Freeman 60, Newport 42: Kellen Miller and Derek Harter scored 14 points apiece as the Scotties (10-7, 5-2) took control in the second half and beat the visiting Grizzlies (9-7, 3-4). Mitch Vander Linden scored 13 points and Cody Unfred added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Freeman, which outscored Newport by 11 points in the second half. Jake Wiley scored a game-high 19 points – 11 coming in the first quarter – to lead the Grizzlies.

Bi-County 2B

Northwest Christian 83, Reardan 58: Dakota Winward made three 3-pointers and 7 of 8 free throws to finish with a game-high 32 points as the Crusaders (15-0, 11-0) eased past the host Indians (6-8, 5-5). Kwinn Hanson scored 25 points and Reuben Clark added 17 for Northwest Christian, which outscored Reardan by 14 points in the fourth. Trevor Peone led three Indians players in double figures with 16 points.

Bi-County 1B

St. Michael’s 66, Wilbur-Creston 53: Gabe Durazo scored 20 points and Chris Shelley added 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Warriors (6-8, 1-3) topped the host Wildcats (5-8, 0-4). Sam South added 17 points for St. Michael’s, which made 10 of 16 fourth-quarter free throws to seal the win. Hayden Herdrick had 20 points and Colton Magers added 10 for Wilbur-Creston.

Panorama League

Selkirk 48, Columbia 44: Matt Emerson scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to guide the Rangers (7-10, 6-4) past the host Lions (4-12, 3-7) in Hunters. Avery Miller chipped in 11 points for Selkirk, which outscored Columbia 15-6 in the second quarter. Justin Singer scored 13 points and Dominick Marquez added 10 for the Lions.

Republic 56, Inchelium 36: Jeremy Bertrang scored 20 points and Saxon Brown added six points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds as the Tigers (3-13, 1-2) routed the visiting Hornets (0-13, 0-8). Republic outscored Inchelium by 10 points in the second quarter and led 29-16 at halftime. Sam LeaderCharge tallied a team-high 13 points for Inchelium.

Northport 60, Curlew 35: David Higgins scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Mustangs (14-2, 9-1) jumped ahead early and cruised past the host Cougars (2-13, 0-8). Frederik Verhaeghe added 14 points and Jeremiah Johnson chipped in 10 for Northport. Hunter Beedle led Curlew with eight points.

C. Washington 2B

Lake Roosevelt 59, Pateros 29: Keith Rosenbaum scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Raiders past the Billygoats at Coulee Dam. Ty Egbert had 13 points and Lee Williams added 11 for Lake Roosevelt.
