Reardan turns back Colfax for 2B title

YAKIMA – Reardan completed a dazzling three-year run Saturday night by muscling past Colfax 11-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-12 to win the State 2B volleyball championship at the SunDome.

The three-time champion Indians looked like they had no business being on the floor in the first two games against their Bi-County 2B rivals that had beaten them three times previously.

The Bulldogs led 9-2 and 20-8. The second game turned on a Colfax scoring run that turned a 12-11 lead into a 24-15 lead. But that was the last success for Colfax.

At that point, Reardan’s seniors were having nothing to do with a second-place trophy.

“I didn’t have to say anything,” Reardan coach Britney Kubik said. “Our seniors took over. When you have seniors like that, you usually don’t have to say anything.”

Whatever the five seniors said, it got the necessary response.

Reardan controlled the net and concentrated on capitalizing on the height advantage they had with 5-foot-3 Colfax setter Amelie Bruya at the net.

Colfax advanced by defeating Bear Creek 25-16, 25-10, 25-18. The win improved Colfax’s semifinal record since 1995 to 14-4.

The Bulldogs were dominant with the serve against the Grizzlies, suffering just two service errors across three games.

“That was really important,” Colfax coach Sue Doering said. “They gave us a lot of points with service errors.”

Reardan sprinted past Davenport in the other semifinal 25-18, 25-15, 25-19, setting the stage for a state title match repeat.

Davenport ended up fourth, losing to Bear Creek 26-24, 25-18, 25-16.

Northwest Christian defeated La Conner 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 to advance to the fifth-place game. The Crusaders captured a third straight state trophy, defeating Napavine 26-24, 25-17, 25-23 for a second straight fifth-place finish.
