Chewelah takes control of NEA

The Chewelah Cougars seized control of the Northeast A League on Friday night.

A week after upsetting previously undefeated Medical Lake, the Cougars leaned on their defense in a 21-0 win over visiting Freeman. The win gave Chewelah (6-1, 4-0) sole possession of first place and a direct route to the NEA crown.

The Cougars intercepted five passes and recovered a fumble, stymieing the Scotties (5-2, 3-1) from the start.

Derek Smith scored from 5 yards out in the first quarter to open the scoring. Caleb Wiebe later added a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown to give Chewelah an early 14-0 advantage. Smith found Dustin Crowell for a 7-yard passing touchdown in the second quarter to cap the scoring.

The Cougars have two remaining regular-season games – at Newport on Friday and home against Riverside on Oct. 26.

Medical Lake 28, Kettle Falls 14: Micah Tappero ran for 137 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals (6-1, 4-1) past the host Bulldogs (0-6, 0-4). Seth Hanson added two touchdowns – one rushing and one receiving – for Medical Lake.

Lakeside 52, Newport 14: The host Eagles (3-4, 2-3) racked up 401 rushing yards and whipped the Grizzlies (2-4, 1-3) at Nine Mile Falls. Keith Kovac threw three touchdown passes for Lakeside.

Great Northern

Deer Park 13, Cheney 9: Nic Clough threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Logan Maxwell on a fake field goal with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the Stags (4-3, 1-2) edged the visiting Blackhawks (3-4, 1-2). Eric Igbinoba scored from 7 yards out in the third quarter to put Cheney ahead 9-6 before Deer Park’s winning score. Clough finished with 255 passing yards and the one score.

Clarkston 35, Colville 9: Austin Hansen threw for a couple of scores and the Bantams (2-5, 1-3) routed the visiting Indians (2-5, 0-3).

Northeast 2B

Colfax 40, Springdale 6: The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1) scored 32 first-quarter points and eased past the visiting Chargers (2-3, 1-2). Colfax running back Levi Hardy ran for 99 yards on 10 carries and scored on a 35-yard run in the first. Kellen McNannay ran for a touchdown and returned an interception 79 yards for another score.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 34, Reardan 0: The Broncos (6-0, 3-0) held the visiting Indians (4-2, 2-1) to 88 yards of total offense and cruised to the win. Cort Ruzicka ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns and also returned a punt block for the games’ first score. The win gave the Broncos sole possession of first place in the league.

Davenport 44, Liberty 22: Shane Hopkins ran for 97 yards and two TDs and returned an interception 30 yards for another score as the Gorillas (3-3, 1-2) dumped the host Lancers (2-5, 0-3).

Southeast 2B

DeSales 38, Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia 12: The Irish (4-1, 2-1) scored 28 unanswered points in the first half and cruised to the win over the visiting Nighthawks (6-1, 4-1). Craig Nelson ran for a touchdown and returned an interception 65 yards for another score.

Northeast 1B North

Cusick 52, Selkirk 12: Ryan Sample threw three touchdown passes and the Panthers (7-0, 4-0) dumped the host Rangers (4-3, 2-2) at Ione. Dominic Cain caught an 18-yard touchdown pass and ran for another score. Both of Cain’s touchdowns came in Cusick’s dominating first-quarter.

Wellpinit 72, Curlew 38: Zach Wynecoop threw for four scores and the Redskins (6-1, 4-1) ran over the visiting Cougars (0-7, 0-5). Chance Wheaton added four rushing touchdowns for Wellpinit, which scored 58 points in the first half.

Columbia-Inchelium 74, Northport 56: Dustin Wyborney had 325 rushing yards on 21 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Lions (5-2, 3-1) beat the host Mustangs (2-5, 0-4). Jeremiah Johnson completed 18 of 26 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns for Northport.

Odessa-Harrington 66, Entiat 24: Sam Schafer ran for 345 yards and six TDs as the Titans (4-3, 3-1) routed the visiting Tigers (3-4, 1-3).

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 48, Wilbur-Creston 6: The Warriors (6-1, 5-0) forced seven turnovers and overcame a sluggish start to steamroll the host Wildcats (1-6, 1-4). Drew Isaak threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns for ACH.

Southeast 1B

Liberty Christian 56, Colton 8: Mike Olson threw three touchdown passes and the Patriots (7-0, 4-0) eased past the host Wildcats (2-5, 0-4).

Touchet 70, LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus 24: Elias Martinez ran for three touchdowns and threw for two scores as the Indians (5-1, 3-1) eased past the host Tigercats (5-2, 3-1).

Garfield-Palouse 48, Pomeroy 24: Riley Hodges ran for four touchdowns to lead the Vikings (3-3, 3-1) past the host Pirates (2-5, 1-3). Hunter Woltering added two rushing touchdowns for Garfield-Palouse.

Nonleague

St. Maries 25, Riverside 20: Jordan Stapleton hauled in a 35-yard pass from Luke Feasline in the fourth quarter and the Lumberjacks (3-4) edged the host Rams (1-6).
