It’s Mead vs. Ferris tonight at Albi for final 4A playoff spot

It’s the final week of the regular season for Greater Spokane League football teams and just one game will decide a play-in berth.

That deciding game is tonight when Mead (7-1) meets Ferris (6-2) at Joe Albi Stadium at 6:15.

The berths already determined are 4A No. 1 Gonzaga Prep (8-0) and 3A No. 1 University (4-4) and No. 2 Shadle Park (3-5).

Mead is coming off an up-and-down game against Rogers and Ferris was humbled in a 21-0 shutout by University.

The Panthers have struggled with injuries, particularly at running back. Starter Davian Barlow, who has missed the last three weeks with an ankle sprain, and backup Luke Hilmes, who started in place of Barlow for two weeks until suffering a concussion, could return tonight.

“They’ve been practicing in limited roles,” Mead coach Sean Carty said.

Carty said the plan is simple against Ferris.

“We need to get back to our 11 yards per carry (average),” Carty said. “If we get that then this thing is back in our control. You’re not going to get anywhere without going through Ferris first.”

Ferris will have its hands full against the GSL’s top-ranked defense and second-best offense.

“The challenge is trying to keep them in front of us and from big plays,” Ferris coach Jim Sharkey said. “They’re so explosive. We have to make them drive the long field and earn their points.”

The Ferris-Mead winner will travel to the Mid-Columbia Conference top seed, either Richland or Chiawana, while G-Prep will play host to one of those teams next week.

• In 3A, the MCC is far from clear. Four teams remain in the hunt for two play-in berths.

• In final GSL games Friday, Rogers (0-8) takes on Mt. Spokane (1-7) in the opener at Albi at 5:30 and Shadle Park goes against Lewis and Clark (4-4) at 8. In the outside games, G-Prep visits Central Valley (6-2) and North Central (1-7) is at U-Hi. Both games kick off at 7.

• One more week remains in Great Northern League play, but co-leaders West Valley (6-2, 4-1) and Pullman (5-2, 3-1) could decide the league title Friday at WV. Kickoff is at 7.

Just two GNL teams advance to play-in games this year.

• In 5A Inland Empire League play-in games, No. 3 seed Post Falls (2-6) is at No. 2 Lake City (4-3-1) while No. 4 Lewiston (3-5) visits top-seeded Coeur d’Alene (6-2). Both games begin at 7.

The winners advance to the state playoffs next week.

In earlier matchups, LC topped Post Falls 45-24 while CdA had to rally on the road to beat Lewiston 26-16.

• In 3A play-in games involving Intermountain League teams, a tripleheader will take place Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.

IML champ Timberlake (4-4) takes on Payette (4-4) at 2; IML third-place finisher Kellogg (1-7) goes against No. 1-ranked Fruitland (8-0) at 5:30; and IML runner-up Priest River (5-3) faces Parma (2-6) at 7:30.

The winners advance to the state playoffs next week.

• In a 2A play-in game Saturday, St. Maries (4-4) visits New Plymouth (6-2) at 1.
