EV girls hand Cheney first GNL loss

East Valley came up with its first Great Northern League girls soccer victory of the regular season, handing host Cheney its first GNL loss, 5-2 on Thursday.

The teams were tied at 2 at the half after Hannah Bowerman and Madison Meade scored for East Valley (1-3 GNL) and Jaisa Holland and Chae Brown did the same for the Blackhawks (2-1). But Cheney didn’t get another shot on goal against the swarming Knights defense.

Nikki Roemer scored early in the second half to break the tie.

In other matches: Halie Gronenthal scored twice for West Valley as the Eagles (3-1) took a 5-0 victory over Colville, outshooting the 0-2 Indians 22-6. … Brooke Morrow and Leah Edens both had two goals and an assist apiece as Clarkston routed Deer Park at home 9-1. The Bantams improved to 2-2 in league play while Deer Park dropped to 0-2.


Colville (3-0) remained undefeated in the GNL and West Valley (0-4) winless as the host Indians took a 15-14, 25-11, 25-16 victory over the Eagles. Colville enjoyed 14 aces that came from eight different players, led by Jacy Vining with three. Leanna Carr led the Indians with 32 assists and five digs. Cassie Finn led WV with five kills and two blocks. … East Valley took advantage of some troublesome passing by Cheney as the Knights (4-0) stayed atop the league standings with a 25-16, 25-21, 17-25, 25-13 win over the host Blackhawks (1-2). Callie Hanson had 29 assists and four aces, and Sam Geibel made six blocks and 15 kills for EV. … Deer Park (1-2) pulled out a 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-6 victory on the road at Clarkston (1-3). Sierra English had 16 kills and Angie Reardan 19 digs to spur the Stags to the win.
