John Lyon scored a game-high 16 points and hit two late 3-pointers to help Newport edge Deer Park 49-46 in a nonleague season-opener Tuesday night in Newport.
Lyon’s 3-pointers gave Newport an eight-point lead with 3 minutes left. Deer Park came within two points in the final minute, but Jeron Konkright’s steal and lay-in gave the Grizzlies a four-point edge with 11 seconds left.
Konkright added 14 points for Newport (1-0). Connor Mullaley scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds. He also made a critical free throw down the stretch.
Nate Guske and Travis Pierce combined for 25 points for the Stags (0-1).
East Valley 60, Timberlake 48: J.T. Phelen had 13 points and 12 rebounds as the Knights (1-0) built a comfortable first-half lead and held on to beat the visiting Tigers (0-1).
Lakeland 60, Cheney 38: Jake Ram scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds, and Tyrel Derrick had eight assists and scored 16 as the Hawks (1-0) cruised past the visiting Blackhawks (0-1). Cheney was led by Alex Berman, who hit five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points.
Sandpoint 70, Priest River 29: Jeremiah Gagnon scored 22 points as the Bulldogs (1-0) surged past the host Spartans (0-1). Thomas Edwards added nine points for the Bulldogs. Jimmy Koch scored eight to lead Priest River.
Pullman 68, Moscow 43: Race Martin scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and A.J. Miles added 17 points as the Greyhounds (1-0) routed the host Bears. Jack Akey and Adam Gresch combined for 29 points for Moscow (0-1).
Northwest Christian 72, Chewelah 33: Johnathon Morris led three players in double figures with 18 points as the Crusaders (1-0) eased past the visiting Cougars (0-1). Chris Hartis had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Ryan Ricks added 14 points and nine boards for Northwest Christian. The Cougars were led by Maeckenzie Miller’s eight points.
St. George’s 72, Wellpinit 29: Erik Muelheims scored 23 points and Dexter Fienko added 18 as the Dragons (1-0) dumped the visiting Redskins (1-1). The Dragons took control of the game early with an 18-4 run.
Kettle Falls 54, Springdale 42: The Bulldogs pulled away after halftime and beat the host Chargers. Kettle Falls held a one-point halftime-edge, but outscored Springdale 29-18 in the second half.
Wilbur-Creston 76, Columbia 35: Nick Densley scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to guide the Wildcats (1-0) past the Lions (0-1) in Hunters. Trystan Rosman added 17 points for Wilbur-Creston, which held a 47-26 halftime lead.
Curlew 67, Northport 21: Mathan Knapp scored 23 points and Hunter Beedle added 16 as the Cougars (1-0) dominated from the outset in a win over the host Mustangs (0-1). Curlew made five 3-point shots in the first quarter.
Liberty 74, Walla Walla Academy 55: Match Burnham had 24 points and nine rebounds to guide the Lancers (1-0) past Walla Walla Academy in Liberty. Ryan Thayer added 19 points and nine rebounds for Liberty.
Lakeside 54, Troy 43: The Knights had three players reach double digits in points and Marcus Pluff added eight rebounds in a win over the Trojans in Plummer. Jordan Meshell, Doug Schatz, and Jordan Nilson scored 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively. Troy was led by Gabe Wright, who was 7 of 10 from the field for 18 points.
Coeur d’Alene freshmen 64, Mullan 56 (OT): Jake Grinde was 8 of 9 from the field, including 2 of 4 on 3-pointers, in leading the Coeur d’Alene freshmen over the visiting Tigers in OT.
