Today’s challenge: Try to prove that there’s a better volleyball team in the area than Class 2B Colfax.
Good luck. The Bulldogs are 29-1, with wins over co-Greater Spokane League champions University and Shadle Park, co-Great Northern League champion Pullman, co-Northeast A League champions Freeman and Lakeside, and two-time defending State 1B champion Tekoa-Oakesdale.
“It seems like this team has hit the ground running,” said coach Sue Doering, Colfax’s coach for a quarter-century. “I would not have predicted this, especially graduating a setter (Amelie Bruya) that was with us for three seasons. Kori Goodwin has stepped into the spot and done an outstanding job.”
Led by main hitters Taylor Larsen and Nicole Sheer, the Bulldogs are 76-7 in games this year. Colfax’s lone loss was to West Valley (Yakima) in pool play at the Sheridan Crossover.
Two of Colfax’s game losses came Sept. 10 against Freeman (22-5), which is on an eight-match winning streak heading in to Saturday’s 1A regional at Cascade (Leavenworth).
The Scotties’ other match losses came against Lakeside and three larger schools at the Sheridan Crossover.
“Qualifying for state by winning the district tournament is the season highlight thus far, along with earning a share of the league title and winning the season-opening tournament at Freeman over (4A regional qualifier Central Valley), and then again defeating CV in a nonleague match,” coach Eva Windlin-Jansen said.
Titans close in
University (19-6) is one 3A regional win away from qualifying for state for the first time in nine years.
“The girls’ willingness to buy into the new offensive system and their strong desire to play defense first has helped create the success we are experiencing this season,” said first-year Titans coach Mike Summers.
Not the first
We reported on Oct. 30 that this year’s three-way tie for the GSL title was unprecedented.
Not so fast, former Lewis and Clark coach Buzzie Welch said. LC, Ferris and Shadle Park tied for first in 1993. Welch has a 1995 GSL program to back up his claim. The GSL’s website says that CV won the title in 1993, but the Bears actually finished in last place that year.
