University caps unbeaten slowpitch season

Lexi Ivankovich went the distance on the mound and went 2 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs to propel the University Titans to a 7-4 victory over the North Central Indians in the Greater Spokane League slowpitch softball championship game on Wednesday afternoon at University High School.

McKenzie Peterson and Hannah Wessel each scored twice for the Titans, who finished the season with a 22-0 record.

Rachel Dolle had two hits for North Central, while Kaylee Levien knocked in a run with a double.

The WIAA doesn’t sponsor postseason tournaments for slowpitch softball.

Girls soccer

Anna Kessler scored in the second minute and the first-place Mead Panthers (12-1 overall, 7-1 league) breezed to a 5-0 win over the Shadle Park Highlanders (3-8, 1-7) in a GSL match at Mead High School.

Chae Brown’s goal in the 19th minute was a header off a corner kick.

• Savannah Hoekstra scored a pair of goals, including the winner 4 minutes into overtime, to lift the Central Valley Bears (11-1, 7-1) to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers (10-3, 5-3).

The win keeps the Bears in second place, one point behind front-running Mead. The Tigers are third, one point ahead of University and Mt. Spokane.

The match ended when Sara Grozdanich shot a cross toward the goal that was saved by Tigers goalkeeper Sienna Tanner. But Tanner mishandled the ball and Hoekstra tapped it in for the winner.

• On senior night at University, two seniors stood out in a 6-0 Titans (6-4, 5-2) win over the visiting North Central Indians (4-6, 2-5).

Sarah Melvin and Mercedee Smith each netted a goal and added an assist as University outshot North Central 14-1 for the match.

• The Mt. Spokane Wildcats’ seniors dominated on Senior Night.

Sierra Bezdicek scored 7 minutes into the match and fellow seniors Ashlee Pedersen (44th) and Shannon McReynolds (70th) chipped in with second-half goals to power the host Wildcats (8-4, 4-4) to a 3-0 victory over the Rogers Pirates (3-10, 0-8).

The victory was the 100th of Mt. Spokane coach Ryan Campanella’s career.

• Colleen Lindsay scored the winning goal in a shootout and the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups eked out a 2-1 victory over the Ferris Saxons at G-Prep.

Hannah Caudill staked the Bullpups (6-7, 3-4) to a 1-0 lead at halftime with a tally in the 35th minute.

Laurne Miller pulled the Saxons (8-4, 4-3) even at the 64-minute mark.

Cross country

The host Deer Park Stags boys and girls claimed Great Northern League crowns and finished off perfect seasons by defeating Pullman and Colville. In the boys race, Kevin Carpenter of Colville won with a time of 16 minutes, 28 seconds. In the girls event, Deer Park’s Kari Gallant edged teammate Mariah Duenich for first place with a time of 20:19. Duenich was credited with the same time. … The Cheney Blackhawks boys and girls earned victories over Clarkston in a dual meet at Cheney. Mariah Brenton of Cheney won the girls race in 20:47, while Cheney’s Kyle Lerch topped the boys field in 16:29. … At Plantes Ferry, the East Valley boys and girls defeated West Valley in a dual meet. West Valley’s Skay McCall breezed to a 2-minute margin of victory in the girls race with a time of 19:45. In the boys race, East Valley’s Scott Kopczynski won in 16:00.
