Outlook

Greater Spokane League: Mead placed runner-up at last year’s State 4A tournament. Mt. Spokane qualified for its sixth consecutive State 3A tournament. … The league welcomes five new coaches: Amanda Bailey, Central Valley; Jill Benson, Gonzaga Prep; Elaina Renius, Mead; Carissa Cameron, North Central; and Mike Summers, University. … The league chase promises to be more wide open than usual. Of the four league coaches who attempted to predict the final standings, each picked a different champion. In two cases, a team that one coach picked to win the title was tabbed by another coach for seventh place. … “Our five returners did not see a lot of court time behind 11 seniors last year, so we are working toward consistent game-time confidence and play,” Mead’s Renius said. … “We hope to be in the mix at the end of the year and maybe surprise some teams along the way with our increased understanding of the game and our dynamic hitting and serving,” CV’s Bailey said. … “There are some strong returners leading some very exciting players. The team looks to challenge for the title,” G-Prep’s Benson said. … “We are going to improve daily and hopefully make another run in the playoffs,” Mt. Spokane coach David Whitehead said. … “I think that we are going to be very competitive this year. We have a well-rounded team with many girls who can play multiple positions,” Lewis and Clark coach Ashley Crowley said. … Returning all-leaguers are: Sasha Montgomery and Alaina Gentili, CV; Emily Romasko and Joslyn Bopray, LC; Paiton Larson, Mt. Spokane; Chloe Brooks and Rachel Stuart, Shadle Park; and Kylie Collins, U-Hi.

Great Northern League: Colville placed fourth at last year’s State 2A tournament. … Colville was hit hard by graduation and the resignation of long-time successful coach Missy Bennett, who has been replaced by Ron Schuh, but the town always produces new talent. … “The best part about our league is that the teams will consistently challenge you and make you stronger,” Pullman coach Jill Nelson said. “There are no chances for off games.” … “The GNL is a strong league that featured three teams that were ranked in the state top-10 last year,” Clarkston coach Adam Van Vogt said. … “I’m excited to see how much this team can progress now that everyone has been working within (my) system for a year now,” Cheney second-year coach Brianne Lowe said. … Returning all-leaguers are: Ashley Seiler, Cheney; Sadie Learn, Colville; Jolene Herzog and Katie Travis, Pullman; and Katelyn Sage, West Valley.

Northeast A League: Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) placed second and Freeman eighth at last year’s State 1A tournament. … “Freeman has a very strong team returning and will dominate the league for the next three years (at least),” Riverside coach Debbie Spray said. … “Experienced returners should/could carry (our) team to a successful league season and beyond,” Freeman coach Eva Windlin-Jansen said. “Newcomers need to contribute early.” … “Our middles are new to the starting lineup, but they are learning quickly,” Lakeside coach Kara Moffatt said. “We are looking to return to the state playoffs.” … Returning all-leaguers are: MVP Kaela Straw and Brooke Riddle, Freeman; Sydney Johnson, Lakeside; and Sydney Spray, Riverside.

B leagues: Colfax, second at last year’s State 2B tournament, returns first-team all-leaguers Taylor Larsen, Nicole Sheer and Cassidy Vorderbrueggen. Colfax’s Bi-County League had four of last year’s top-five placers at state, although three-time state champion Reardan graduated much of its firepower. Davenport placed fourth and Northwest Christian was fifth. … Two-time State 1B champion Tekoa-Oakesdale returns six starters, including Southeast co-MVP Cassandra Mendoza and all-leaguers Mattie Jo Johnson and Alexa Lindgren. The area produced the top six state placers last year: T-O, Colton, St. John-Endicott, Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Wilbur-Creston and Odessa-Harrington.
