G-Prep hosts District 8 4A title games

As it turned out, Gonzaga Prep’s tiny gymnasium will be the site tonight for the District 8 4A girls and boys basketball championship games.

Fans would be advised to arrive early to get a seat. The gym has seating on just one side of the gym, so fans will have to be cozy.

The Central Valley girls (15-5), double-overtime winners over Mead on Thursday, meet runaway Greater Spokane League champion G-Prep (19-1) at 5.

In the boys title game, Ferris (17-3) takes on the Bullpups (17-3) at 7. It’s a rematch of Thursday’s humdinger in which G-Prep rallied from a 13-point deficit for a 61-55 victory, earning the outright league title when Mead upset CV.

The district winners will advance to the subregional and play host to the Mid-Columbia Conference’s district champs on Friday.

Advancing to the district final was critical, because it allows the losers a second chance at advancing to the subregional.

In loser-out games tonight involving the third and fourth seeds, the Mead boys (13-7) visit CV (15-4) at 7 and the Lewis and Clark girls (14-6) go to Mead (14-6) at 5.

Those winners visit the losers of tonight’s games on Tuesday with a subregional berth at stake.

• In 3A, most of the matchups are determined for the subregional openers Tuesday involving GSL and MCC teams. The games are loser-out, with the tournaments being reseeded for semifinal matchups. The top three teams advance to the regional round of state.

In the boys, University (11-9) plays host to Hanford (5-15) or Sunnyside (4-14). Those teams play in a loser-out playoff Monday.

In other openers, Rogers (6-14) goes to Kennewick (12-8); Southridge (7-13) goes to Shadle (7-12); and Mt. Spokane (5-15) visits Kamiakin (11-9).

In girls games, Kennewick (4-16) goes to U-Hi (7-13); Hanford (11-9) is at Shadle (7-13); Mt. Spokane (7-13) visits Kamiakin (14-6); and North Central (2-18) goes to Sunnyside (15-3).

The Mt. Spokane/Kamiakin doubleheader is set for 5:30 (girls) and 7 (boys). The U-Hi and Shadle doubleheaders are at 6 (girls) and 8 (boys). Single games begin at 6.
