Michele Strauss continued her torrid pitching on Wednesday as fourth-seeded Ferris eliminated No. 3 Mead 2-0 at Whitworth University at the District 8 4A softball tournament.
Strauss pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 as the Saxons (11-10) won their fourth consecutive game. She has struck out 131 batters in her last 71 innings and 208 for the season. Strauss allowed a first-inning leadoff single to left on a 0-2 count.
Ferris has won seven of 10.
Brooke Goodwin and Meg Perry had first-inning RBIs for Ferris, which will play for a regional berth at 3 p.m. Friday at Whitworth against today’s loser between No. 1 Central Valley and No. 2 Lewis and Clark.
Kylie Bremner struck out six for Mead (10-9).
• Lauren Hare went 3 for 5 with three triples and three runs as fourth-seeded North Central (6-14) defeated No. 3 Mt. Spokane 9-5 at the District 8 3A tournament at Whitworth.
Jessica Huffman went 3 for 4 with a two-run double during NC’s six-run sixth. NC will play for regional seeding at 5 p.m. Friday at Whitworth against either University or Shadle Park.
Jadeyn went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Wildcats (12-10), who will play at two-time defending state champ Kamiakin in a subregional on Tuesday.
• Jenna Moser doubled, homered and had four RBIs as host Colton (17-2) beat Liberty Christian 13-3 in a District 9 1B semifinal. Colton will play for a state berth at 11 a.m. on May 24 against host Touchet (13-6).
Left fielder Colin Spendlove threw out Cole Flett at home plate in the seventh inning to preserve top-seeded East Valley’s 4-3 win over fourth-seeded West Valley at the District 7 2A tournament at EV.
WV (11-10) led 2-0 after Jason Lane’s two-run single in the fourth. The Knights (16-5) took advantage of errors to take a 4-2 lead.
EV will meet third-seeded Cheney (13-7) at 1 p.m. Saturday at EV for the title and regional berth. WV will play second-seeded Colville (11-8) at 10 a.m. at EV in a loser-out game.
At Colville, Riley Jones’ sacrifice fly in the sixth snapped a 3-all tie and two runs followed off an infield error as Cheney posted a 6-3 win.
Top-seeded Kyle Fager of Lewis and Clark and second-seeded Josiah Hopkins of Mead won boys singles semifinals at Gonzaga Prep to advance to today’s championship match of the District 8 4A tournament.
Fager topped teammate Jacob Johnson 6-1, 6-1 while Hopkins held off his teammate, Hank Cikutovich, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
Also at G-Prep, Ferris’ Courtney Provan and G-Prep’s Lizzy Marcinkowski won girls 4A singles semifinals to advance to today’s finals. Provan swept Central Valley’s Elena Wolf 6-0, 6-0 while Marcinkowski edged CV’s Kyra Harmes 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
• Mt. Spokane’s Kayla Uplinger and Shadle Park’s Audra Spargo won District 8 3A girls singles semifinals at U-Hi to move to today’s finals.
Uplinger stopped teammate Cecily Wright 6-2, 6-1 while Spargo beat teammate Daniela Giacomelli 7-5, 6-2.
Also at U-Hi, top-seeded Kyle Smithgall of U-Hi beat Shadle’s Jomell Pagarillo 6-1, 6-1 to advance to today’s final. Smithgall will play teammate and No. 2 Tyler Bates, who rallied to top Joe Turner of Mt. Spokane 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
