GSL sweeps State 4A girls tennis berths

It was a case of simultaneous elation if ever there was one.

Less than 45 minutes into Saturday’s 4A regional tennis tourney, Courtney Provan walked off the Gonzaga Prep courts and ran into Ferris teammates Jill Louthian and Kayley Lenhart.

“Did you win?” they asked each other. Each answered “Yes.”

That was followed by squeals of delight, hugging and photos.

Provan had dispatched Eden Snider of Pasco, 6-0, 6-0 to claim the No. 1 seed from the regional into next week’s state tournament. Louthian and Lenhart had just beaten Pasco’s Zara Guzman and Katelyn Bedoya, 6-1, 6-0.

“It’s the first time that anyone has come close to finishing at the same time as Courtney,” Ferris coach Mike McLauchlin said, delighted to have the two top seeds and already making plans for the trip to Richland.

4A

The GSL claimed all four girls State 4A tournament berths. In addition to Provan, Gonzaga Prep’s Lizzy Marcinkowski beat Snider, 6-2, 6-2 to earn a berth.

Mead’s Micca Motzer and Jessica Star knocked off Guzman and Bedoya, 6-1, 6-0 to claim the second doubles berth.

In boys play, district singles champ Kyle Fager of Ferris withdrew from the regionals so Mead’s Josiah Hopkins moved up to play No. 1 singles and beat Chiawana’s Paul Chapuis, 6-0, 6-4. Chapuis got the second berth by beating Jacob Johnson of Lewis and Clark, 6-3, 6-2.

LC’s Luke Brittan and Jordan Strandness knocked off Richland’s Zach Fisher and Trent Prussing 6-4, 6-1 to claim the No. 1 seed.

Brittan and Strandness held down the top two singles spots for the Tigers all season and reteamed for doubles. They’ve played doubles at state the past two seasons and reached the state semifinals a year ago.

3A

Shadle Park singles players Audra Spargo and Daniela Giacomelli both earned girls state tourney berths at the 3A regional at University.

Spargo won the all-Shadle semifinal, beating Giacomelli, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, but lost to Kennewick’s Stephanie Buckingham in the regional final, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.

Giacomelli claimed the third state berth, knocking off Kayla Uplinger of Mt. Spokane, 6-1, 6-1.

University claimed two of the region’s three doubles berths but Bailee Sanderson and Sofia Morrison of Southridge claimed the top seed.

RiLee Skidmore and Katelyn Schmidt lost in the final, 6-1, 6-2, and are the No. 2 seed. Teammates Sonya Bertrandt and Julia Adair knocked off Kamiakin’s Rebecca Young and Courtney Hall to earn the third seed.

Hanford dominated the boys singles, claiming the top two seeds, with Darko Stankovic beating teammate Cyrus Stevens in the final, 6-2, 6-1. Ethan Ling of Southridge beat Kyle Smithgall of U-Hi, 6-4, 6-3 to earn the No. 3 seed.

Chad McKenzie and Jared Bolt of Kennewick knocked off Ben Welch and Matt Inman of Kamiakin to win the doubles final. Sean and Will Thompson of Hanford earned the No. 3 state seed, knocking off Josh Ramsey and Seth Olson of U-Hi in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
