PUYALLUP, Wash. – The Central Valley Bears will be seeing Jose Moreno-Gudino in their nightmares.
Pasco High School’s junior goalkeeper stopped four penalty kicks, one in regulation and three in an overtime shootout as the Bulldogs snapped Central’s 15-game winning streak to move on to the State 4A championships after a 3-2 victory on Friday night.
Pasco meets Todd Beamer, also a 3-2 shootout winner over Glacier Peak, at 5 p.m. for the title.
Central Valley meets the Grizzlies at noon for third place. Both games will be at Sparks Stadium.
The Bulldogs (18-4) had been the last team to defeat Central Valley (16-3), 5-1 in mid-March, but they lost a 2-1 playoff march to the Bears two weeks ago. Friday night, they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a corner kick bender by junior midfielder Nathan Martinez in the 27th minute and a spinning shot from in front of the net three minutes later by Edwin Aquino.
The lead held until the 53rd minute, when Bears midfielder Devin Hauensgtein scored from in front of the net, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Pasco fans had begun whistling for the official to stop the game at the end of what seemed like a particularly lengthy dose of injury time when Luke Livingston briefly became the hero for the Bears.
Flashing in from the left to connect off a corner kick by AJ Stretch – the third corner from the right in a sequence of near misses – Livingston blasted the ball past Moreno-Gudino to tie it. The official continued the game for yet another minute but neither team could score then or in the 10-minute “Golden Goal” overtimes.
In the shootout, Bears David Uribe, Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez and Aquino scored while Jake Levine’s lead-off shot for Central Valley hit the crossbar and Moreno-Gudino saved shots by Stretch and Noah Whitman.
Pasco outshot the Bears 15-11, putting five of its shots on goal to four for CV. The Bears had more corner kicks, 8-4.
Moreno-Gudino saved two shots from the field by CV while Bears’ keeper Andrew Bertone saved three.
