Connon Halonen rushed for 224 yards with three touchdowns and visiting Gonzaga Prep advanced to a State 4A quarterfinal game with a 35-21 first-round win over Moses Lake on Friday.
Halonen also went 5 of 6 for 157 yards with a 78-yard touchdown pass-and-run to Sam Lockett. Lockett finished with three catches for 127 yards.
The ninth-ranked Bullpups (9-2) will face No. 2 Richland (11-0), a 62-28 winner over West Valley (Yakima), next weekend.
“We battled through a lot of mistakes,” coach Dave McKenna said. “I’m proud of the way our kids continued to compete.”
G-Prep built a 21-14 lead at intermission and limited the Chiefs to one score in the second half.
“We definitely came up with some stops in the second half,” McKenna said.
The Bullpups outgained Moses Lake 519-280, and the Chiefs turned it over three times.
Brandon Griffith led Moses Lake with 136 yards passing with three scores. Moses Lake came into the game on a six-game winning streak.
Hockinson 53, Pullman 18: Canon Racanelli passed for 342 yards with seven touchdowns and the third-ranked Hawks (11-0) routed the Greyhounds (6-4) in a 2A first-round playoff matchup.
Hockinson scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and led 39-2 at intermission.
Matt Henry caught six passes for 163 yards with three touchdowns for the Hawks.
Newport 13, Zillah 6: Tug Smith took the second-half kickoff to the house to lead the visiting Grizzlies (9-1) to a win over the eighth-ranked Leopards (9-2) in the first round of the State 1A tournament.
Danny Bradbury recorded 74 yards rushing with 7 1/2 tackles.
Newport, ranked 10th in 1A, will face Saturday’s Connell-Colville winner next weekend in a quarterfinal game.
Royal 35, Freeman 0: Sawyer Jenks passed for 248 yards with three touchdowns and the top-ranked Knights (11-0) downed the Scotties (7-3) in a 1A first-round clash.
Corbin Christensen caught eight passes for 125 yards with two touchdowns. Royal outgained Freeman 293-64.
Davenport 53, Lake Roosevelt 0: Alex Plasencia rushed for 164 yards on 10 carries with three touchdowns and added a TD catch and the fifth-ranked Grizzlies (9-2) routed the visiting Raiders (7-4) in the first round of the State 2B playoffs.
Justin Regan accumulated 148 rushing yards with a touchdown. Jaden Flett added a pair of touchdown carries and threw for one.
Davenport advances to a quarterfinal game against Asotin, which knocked off Tri-Cities Prep 31-14.
Garfield-Palouse 70, Republic 8: Evan Weagraff ran for 135 yards with three scores and the Vikings (7-2) defeated the Tigers (6-4) in a 1B play-in game. Austin Jones added 134 yards with three scores and Daniel Orfe added 100 yards and two scores for the Vikings.
