Riverside senior Ben Shaw won the 1A boys 1,600-meter run Thursday on the first day of the State 1A/2B/1B track and field championships at Eastern Washington’s Roos Field in Cheney.
Shaw won with a time of 4 minutes, 16.89 seconds. He topped Goldendale’s Dillon Rising (4:24.31) and Eric Steiger of Lynden Christian (4:26.68). Tyler Pena of Medical Lake placed 13th at 4:40.42.
Northwest Christian senior Tyler Shea placed third in the 2B 1,600 at 4:26.19.
Freeman senior Andrew McGill won his preliminary heat in 1A 300-meter hurdles. Lakeside sophomore Noah Cherrington won his heat to qualify for Saturday’s final. In the 2B preliminaries, NWC’s Will Lane won his heat, while Ben Ahmann of Colfax was second and qualified.
Lakeside took first and second in 1A pole vault. Freshman Hana Hill took top honors, clearing 12 feet, 6 inches on her third attempt at the height, while senior Allie Cherrington was second at 11 feet.
Becky George, a senior from Deer Park, finished third in 1A 1,600 at 5:07.28. Colville sophomore Alaina Stone was fifth (5:09.17) and Riverside sophomore Lizzy Shaw was sixth (5:11.09).
Northwest Christian senior Eliana Summers won the 2B 1,600 at 5:17.58, 9 seconds ahead of second-place Elaina Hansen of Rainier Christian. NWC’s Ava Shackell was fourth (5:28.55) and Lind-Ritzville/Sprague’s Rose Melville placed seventh (5:30.83).
In the 1B 1,600, Hannah Funkhouser of Trout Lake broke the meet record with a time of 5:14.81. Oakesdale sophomore Elisabeth Perry finished third at 5:40.62. Last year’s second-place finisher, Gracie StrangeOwl of Cusick, was fourth (5:43.16) and Anais Mills of Garfield-Palouse was fifth (5:48.35). Madison Dingman of Oakesdale finished 13th at 6:07.25.
Chewelah’s Lillian Kirry won a preliminary heat in the 1A 300 hurdles to qualify for Saturday’s final. In the 2B 300 hurdles, Darby Soliday of Davenport won her preliminary heat, while Liberty’s Kendyl Fletcher and NWC’s Megan McSheffery also qualified. Oakesdale teammates Anne Hockett and Amber Jones finished 1-2 in their 1B 300 hurdles preliminary.
