Prep roundup: Central Valley softball advances to District 8 4A championship game

Gianna McCoy hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning and second-seeded Central Valley (14-3) edged sixth-seeded Lewis and Clark (9-8) 3-2 in a District 8 4A semifinal on Friday.

CV faces Richland for the district title on May 18, with both teams qualifying for state.

CV’s Haley Lance tied it in the bottom of the ninth with a RBI double.

Kylie Pester had 15 strikeouts in a complete game for LC, which plays a loser-out game at University on May 18.

University 10, Mead 7: Alyssa Benthagen went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Makayla Marshall went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and the fourth-seeded Titans (14-5) eliminated the visiting eighth-seeded Panthers (7-12) in a loser-out.

Peyton Cushner hit a solo home run and reached base four times for Mead.

District 8 3A

Southridge 6, Mt. Spokane 4: Bailey Rose hit a go-ahead single in the sixth inning and the third-seeded Suns (14-8) beat the second-seeded Wildcats (12-4) in a semifinal. Rose went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Mt. Spokane will host Shadle Park in a loser-out game on Wednesday.

Southridge 12, Rogers 2: Bailey Rose drove in three runs on three hits and the third-seeded Suns (13-8) defeated the sixth-seeded Pirates (2-13) in a first-round game at Mt. Spokane HS.

Hermiston 8, Shadle Park 1: Sydney Stefani went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and the fifth-seeded Bulldogs (14-7) beat the fourth-seeded Highlanders (12-5) in a first-round game at Kennewick Fields.

District 7 2A

Cheney 11, Clarkston 0: Emily Bann pitched a three-hit shutout and the second-seeded Blackhawks (9-10) eliminated the visiting fifth-seeded Bantams (6-12) in a first-round game. Cheney advances to the district semifinal on Tuesday.

District 5/6 and 7/9 regional

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 7, Pomeroy 0: Sarah Bradshaw struck out nine in a complete game, Gabi Isaak drove in a pair of runs and the second-seeded Warriors (21-1) beat the Pirates (16-5) in a semifinal at Merkel Sports Complex.

ACH advances to the regional championship game against Colton while Pomeroy faces Selkirk in a loser-out on May 17.

Bradshaw went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and the Warriors (20-1) beat seventh-seeded Garfield-Palouse (7-12) 7-1 in a first round game earlier in the day.

Pomeroy topped Curlew 10-4 in its first-round matchup. Keely Maves hit two triples and drove in two while Heidi Heyvelt struck out nine in a complete game.

Colton 12, Inchelium 4: Jordan Moehrle went 4 for 5 with three runs and the Wildcats (17-3) beat the Hornets (11-6) in a semifinal.

In its first-round game, Emily Schultheis went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Josie Schultheis struck out four in a two-hitter and the Wildcats (16-3) beat Selkirk (13-7) 10-0.

Inchelium faces a loser-out against Garfield-Palouse (9-12) on May 17. Meika Heath pitched a complete game and the Hornets defeated Sunnyside Christian 11-0 in a first-round game earlier in the day.

Gar-Pal beat Curlew (9-8) 14-4 in a loser-out as Kenzi Pedersen struck out seven in a complete game.

Idaho

Priest River 14, Kellogg 4: Jasmine Martin went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and the Spartans (12-9) beat the visiting Wildcats (6-11) in the 3A District 1-2 second place game to earn a berth to state.

Baseball

Lakeland 5, Sandpoint 4: Justin Dennison struck out five in a complete game and the Hawks (11-11) beat the visiting Bulldogs (9-16) in the Idaho 4A District 1-2 Game 3 to earn a berth to state.

Priest River 12, Bonners Ferry 10: Logan Shockey went 2 for 4 with four runs and the visiting Spartans (6-13) beat the Badgers (9-10) in the Idaho 3A District 1 second-place game to earn a berth to state.

Girls tennis

The Greater Spokane League subdistrict tournament concluded with Lewis and Clark claiming the team title.

Brooke Fager (LC) defeated Emma Owen (Ferris) 6-0, 6-0 on Thursday in the championship match.

On Friday, Gretchen Drews (University) beat Taryn Harvey of Central Valley 6-3, 6-2 in the third-place match. Alia Alvarez (U-Hi) topped Phoebe Milatz (Mead) 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth-place match.

In doubles, Carolyn Johnson and Madelyn Dibble (LC) defeated Sophie Koehler and Luca Mistereck (Mead) 7-5, 7-5 in the title match. Abigail Ward and Nicloe Resonovic (LC) beat Allie Flynn and Cambry Robbins (Mead) 7-6, 7-5 for third place. Megan Carver and Hannah Carver (U-Hi) defeated Allie Vu and Isabella Husein (Ferris) 6-0, 6-0 for fifth place.

District 7 2A

Clarkston and Pullman earned three semifinal berths apiece between singles and doubles competition in the 2A District 7 boys tennis championships at the WSU outdoor courts.

From Clarkston, No. 1 singles seed Coleton Tenwick and third-seeded Jack Hedrick each went unbeaten to advance to Saturday’s semifinal round, along with the second-seeded doubles pairing of Colton Dudley and Jason Mai.

For the Greyhounds, No. 1 doubles seeds Tim Watts and Andy He and the third-seeded pairing of Henry Ward and Sasha Wood secured spots in the final four, as did singles player and second seed Ravi Lin. Pullman girls doubles team of Addison Hawes and Lucy Gao also advanced.

The tournament resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. First-and-second-place finishers from this event will advance to a regional crossover with foes from the Central Washington Athletic Conference to be held on Friday in Yakima.
